Lake Natron

Park Overview

Lake Natron is a soda lake at the lowest point of the eastern section of the Great Rift Valley. The lake, which borders Kenya to the east, lies at an altitude of 600m above sea level. It is fed by mineral-rich hot springs and the Southern Ewaso Ng’iro River.

It is shallow with a depth and size that change due to the high level of evaporation. “Natron” is the word for the mixture of salt and minerals left behind. The alkaline water temperature may reach 60 degrees c., depending on rainfall. The lake falls within the Lake Natron Basin, a Ramsar wetlands site of International Importance.

Because of its high temperature and variable salt content the lake does not support wildlife. However, it is the principal breeding site for the lesser flamingo, a near threatened species. Lake Natron’s caustic environment is a barrier against predators trying to reach their nests.

Greater flamingos also breed here on the mud flats. Algae and tilapia, fish that survive in alkaline waters provide food. The land surrounding the lake is dry with sand rivers, rock hills, Masai steppe, acacia trees, and the active volcanic mountains Lengai and Gelai. A beautiful rocky river with waterfalls forms a natural oasis nearby. The area is ideal for mountain and river walks

The best time to visit Lake Natron is during the dry season from June to October. During this period, the weather is cooler and drier, making travel and outdoor activities more comfortable. Roads are easier to access, and visitors can enjoy clear views of the surrounding landscapes, volcanic mountains, and the lake itself.

This season is also ideal for hiking activities such as climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai, the famous active volcano near the lake. Wildlife viewing and cultural tours with the Maasai community are also more enjoyable because movement around the area becomes easier.

Another excellent time to visit is between December and February when thousands of flamingos gather around the lake for breeding. Lake Natron is one of the most important breeding sites for lesser flamingos in East Africa, so this period offers beautiful birdwatching and photography opportunities.

During the rainy season, especially from March to May, some roads may become difficult to pass due to mud and flooding, which can make travel more challenging.

Flamingo Watching

Lake Natron is famous for being one of the largest breeding grounds for lesser flamingos in East Africa. Thousands of flamingos gather around the alkaline waters of the lake to breed and feed. Visitors can observe large groups of pink flamingos covering the lake surface, creating one of the most beautiful natural scenes in Tanzania.

The best time for flamingo viewing is between August and February when breeding activities are active. Bird lovers and photographers especially enjoy this experience because of the unique scenery and opportunities to capture wildlife images.

Hiking to Ngare Sero Waterfalls

One of the most popular adventures around Lake Natron is hiking to the beautiful Ngare Sero Waterfalls. Visitors walk through narrow rocky gorges, streams, and natural paths surrounded by cliffs and green vegetation.

The hike provides a refreshing experience because travelers can cool themselves in natural pools beneath the waterfall. Local Maasai guides usually lead the hike while explaining the history, culture, and environment of the area.

Climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai, also known as the “Mountain of God” by the Maasai people, is an active volcanic mountain located near Lake Natron. Adventure travelers climb the mountain during the night to avoid daytime heat and reach the summit before sunrise.

The climb is physically challenging but rewards visitors with breathtaking views of Lake Natron, the Great Rift Valley, and surrounding landscapes. It is one of the few active volcanoes in the world producing unique carbonatite lava.

Walking Safaris

Guided walking tours around the lake allow visitors to explore the environment closely. Travelers can walk through open plains, volcanic landscapes, and lake shores while learning about local plants, bird species, and geological features. Walking safaris also provide peaceful interaction with nature compared to vehicle-based safaris.

Bird Watching

Besides flamingos, Lake Natron supports many bird species including pelicans, ostriches, herons, storks, and eagles. Birdwatchers enjoy observing both resident and migratory birds that depend on the lake ecosystem.

The area is considered an important destination for ornithologists and bird enthusiasts from around the world.
