Tour Overview

This safari will take you to Tarangire National Park, Lake Eyasi and the Serengeti National Park. You will be able to explore the Serengeti in detail as you cover a wider area as opposed to non-migration safaris. The tour is tailored to bring you closer to the heart of the migration itself. The high drama of a river crossing at the Mara River is arguably the highlight of the Wildebeest Migration, a stunning life-and-death display as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest brave the treacherous currents and lurking crocodiles in a last ditch attempt to reach the safety of the Maasai Mara in Kenya.

Our eight-day river crossing safari takes you into the northern Serengeti and offers the best chance of seeing death-defying leaps and heart-wrenching near misses as you spend multiple nights and days in the world-famous Serengeti National Park.

Day 2: Visit Hadzabe & Datoga

After an early breakfast (around 6.30 am) you will drive to Lake Eyasi, the journey takes just over an hour.

The Hadzabe Bushmen are the last true hunter-gatherers in East Africa, around the lake live about 700-800 tribesmen in small groups. The Hadzabe live almost the same way as our own ancestors in the Stone Age. They hunt animals with bow and arrow and collect fruits, roots and honey from the baobab trees. After a welcome and an insight into the village life, it goes with some men on a common hunting. The hunt takes place at a fairly fast pace, especially when an animal is spotted.

The Hadzabe hunt antelopes and gazelles, but also smaller animals such as birds or mongooses.

In the late morning you will visit then the Datoga tribe. These pastoralists are also skilled blacksmiths. They collect metal scrap, which they cleverly process into bracelets, arrowheads and knives. You also have the opportunity to visit one of the huts in the village. Here you can watch the women how they grind flour from corn, from which later bread is baked.

In the early afternoon you will return to Your Lodge in Karatu. On the way back you can enjoy the impressions of your safari and the unique visit to the Hadzabe Bushmen and Datoga.

Overnight:Karatu

Day 3: Ngorongoro Crater Tour

After breakfast you will descend into the Ngorongoro Crater also often referred to as the “Eden of Africa” . The largest unbroken caldera in the world; the Ngorongoro Crater is unparalleled in terms of wildlife concentration.

Your drive will be in constant contact with other drivers to locate the best sightings of animals and with a little luck you will be able to spot the big 5 inside the Crater. Lunch will be served at the picnic site and late in the afternoon we will drive back to the Crater rim and drive to your lodge at Karatu.

Overnight:Karatu

Day 4: Game en Route to Serengeti Central

After breakfast, we will start our game drive around the Kogatende area, searching around the kopjes looking for carnivores and the large migration groups that will be preparing to cross the Mara River into Kenya.

North Serengeti is home to large numbers of hippos and Nile crocodiles, the Mara River is the last major obstacle standing between the Wildebeest Migration and the relative safety of the Maasai Mara. If you’re patient and a little lucky, you may even get to witness the death-defying crossing itself where wildebeest and zebras brave the river’s currents and crocodiles in an attempt to reach safety on the opposite bank. After spending time catching up with these spectacular natural events we drive back to our lodge in Central Serengeti for an overnight.

Overnight:Central Serengeti

Day 5: Full Day Serengeti central
